NASA / Goddard Space Flight CenterNASA’s MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS)
have been observing Earth's radiance field, from polar orbit, from Terra
since early 2000 and from Aqua since mid 2002. We have developed
algorithms that invert the MODIS observations to infer properties of
atmospheric aerosols in cloud free areas over certain "dark" targets over
ocean and land surfaces.
Comparisons with ground-based sunphotometer observations demonstrate
that in optimal conditions, MODIS –derived aerosol optical depths (AOD
or t) generally compare to within ±(0.04+0.05t) over ocean and
±(0.05+0.15t) over land. As AOD is a column integrated, unitless
property of the aerosol optical loading, one must make assumptions to
relate AOD to surface level fine particle concentration, an important
parameter for air quality monitoring and human health studies.
