Fly around the World with a Solar Powered Airplane

Hannes Ross

Member of the Solar Impulse Team, 85640 Putzbrunn, Germany

Quite a few manned and unmanned solar powered aircraft have been developed and flown in the last 30 years. Objectives and missions cover a wide spectrum ranging from a pure technological goal to “Fly with Solar Energy” to civil or military surveillance and reconnaissance missions. However, none of those aircraft was able to demonstrate a continuous day and night operation until 2005.

An overview of the historic solar powered aircraft is provided and the basic challenges which have to be solved for a solar powered aircraft are being discussed:
* Geographical area of operation, time windows during the year, mission profiles, payload
* Energy collection and utilization
* Typical design parameter for different missions

Today's technological status in the critical areas (solar cells, batteries, structure/materials) is discussed. It allows developing a solar powered aircraft with the capability not only to fly during the sunshine hours, but to save enough energy during the day to fly throughout the night and recollect energy after sunrise the next day for a perpetual continuation of flight.

In 2001 the Swiss Bertrand Piccard, who together with Brian Jones (UK) circled the earth in a balloon in 1999, proposed to design a manned solar powered aircraft and to fly it around the world. Such an aircraft is now being developed by the Solar Impulse organization in Switzerland. The primary objective of this endeavor is to make people aware of the fact that the conventional energy sources are limited and that renewable energy must and can be used to solve future demands.

Development aspects of the Solar Impulse Program are described and a program status is provided.

On Shock-Buffet, Shock-Buffet Frequency Lock-In, and Their Possible Relationship to Transonic Aeroelastic Phenomena

Shock-buffet is a phenomenon of large, self-sustained shock oscillations that are observed for certain combinations of Mach number and steady mean angle of attack (without any structural motion!). Shock buffet has a characteristic frequency that is within the range of typical elastic structural and control frequencies of fighter and transport airplanes. A numerical study was initiated to study the shuck-buffet phenomenon, and examine the possible relationship of shock-buffet and undesirable nonlinear transonic aeroelastic phenomena such as limit-cycle oscillations (LCO), and control-surface buzz.

The on-going study has three parts – Numerical flow simulations of a NACA0012 airfoil in transonic buffeting flows. These simulations characterize the shock-buffet phenomenon and validate the computational methodology via comparison to wind tunnel experiments; Numerical simulations of flow responses to prescribed airfoil motion; and Numerical aeroelastic simulations of spring-suspended airfoils in transonic buffeting flows.

Prescribing airfoil motions revealed a frequency lock-in phenomenon – It was found that for prescribed airfoil motion of frequencies that are close to the shock-buffet frequency, and are beyond some threshold amplitude, the shockbuffet frequency synchronizes with the airfoil motion frequency. There is a broad analogy between this flow phenomenon and the flow field of the Von Karman vortex street found behind a cylinder with the cylinder undergoing a prescribed oscillation. It is speculated that the locked-in shock-buffet excites the elastic structure in a resonance mechanism, resulting in LCO or other nonlinear aeroelastic phenomena.

The seminar will present the phenomena of shock-buffet and shock-buffet lock-in, will present aeroelastic responses of single- and two-dof systems in buffeting flows, and suggest a physical mechanism that may contribute to LCO and control surface buzz observed in fighter planes.

Integral Criteria for Diminishing the Boundary Stresses in Elastic Domains with Holes

S. Vigdergauz

Israel Electric Corp., Ltd.

The following linearly elastostatic optimization problem for a 2D region with holes is considered:

Given an external load, find the holes areas and their mutual arrangement and shapes in order to provide a favorable hoop stress distribution.

Here, the engineering aim is usually either (A) to minimize the maximum stress along the holes or (B) to smooth them to avoid both occurrence of local stress concentrations and underloading of certain parts of the boundary. The absolutely non-trivial and purely analytical example here are the equi-stress shapes (ESS) along which the stresses are simultaneously constant and globally minimal [1]. However, they exist only in an infinite plane and under a bulk-dominating far loading. In any other case a numerical analysis should be implemented when both criteria require the point wise stress estimation with substantial accuracy. This is a hard computational task especially within a repetitive optimization problem. Instead, we propose to use the integral counterparts of the above mentioned local estimations:

(A') - Ln norm of the hoop stresses which reaches the stress maximum (A) as n tends to infinity and (B')- the hoop stresses variation V fully corresponding to (B). In the ideal limit the variation goes to zero or, equivalently, to the equi-stress condition.
In contrast to the ESS, the (A') – and (B')-optimal holes exist under much weaker conditions. On the other hand, the integral criteria are computationally more stable than the point wise quantities and hence can be easily embedded into stochastic optimization. For a variety of geometries, this two-fold advantage permits us to numerically solve the shape optimization problem at hand by a standard genetic algorithm approach. As an example, a circular disk with two identical side holes under a uniform compression is considered. The results obtained show that the optimal holes are kidney-like in shape. Compared to the widely used circular holes they diminish the hoop stresses up to tens of percents depending on the holes mutual arrangement. It should be remarked that the newly defined criterion is taken over the total region boundary including the fixed outer contour of the disk.
The proposed criterion of the stress field optimality may find further use in arious continuum mechanics problems.

The Gaussian Mixture MCMC Particle Algorithm for Dynamic Cluster Tracking

Signal Processing and Communications Laboratory
Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, UK

The problem of multiple object tracking (MOT) poses major challenges for researchers in the fields of estimation and sensor fusion. Essential difficulties that are frequently encountered in MOT refer to a) data association, namely, the need to efficiently associate observations with their emitting sources in a highly cluttered environment, b) complex behavioral dynamics which might involve social interactions between objects, and c) adequate statistical representation of the overall scenery. In this talk I will elaborate on some of these issues and present a unified approach for tracking multiple clusters of coordinated objects based on a novel Markov chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) filtering scheme.

Belonging to the family of sequential Monte-Carlo (SMC) algorithms, the newly proposed filter relies on a discrete approximation of the posterior probability density function of the joint state. As opposed to the conventional SMC approaches which tend to become inefficient in high-dimensional settings, the proposed filtering method naturally copes with complex scenarios consisting of many objects owing to its Metropolis-Hastings core. A demonstration of the new filter’s performance when applied for feature tracking in a video sequence will be presented.

The seminar will take place on Monday, 28.12.2009,
at 13:30, in the Seminar Room,
Asher Space Research Institute

Light Refreshments will be served before the seminar.

The quantity and availability of remote sensing data is expanding rapidly. The vastness and complexity of the data can actively discourage investigators new to the field from making use of the data. Even those who are willing to scale the steep learning curve required to use the data often err in making proper use of data from an unfamiliar sensor. The MODIS atmosphere remote sensing workshop will give new users enough exposure and familiarity to the whole process of obtaining, understanding, and using MODIS atmosphere data products so that they can proceed to work with this data independently. Hands on activities are stressed throughout the workshop, which will take place in a computer facility with internet access for all participants. All software used in the workshop is freely available. It is assumed that participants will have completed coursework or have a basic understanding of atmospheric science and remote sensing. Attendees are not expected to become experts in this brief time period but should be able to acquire a familiarity with how and where to obtain the data, how to make proper use of the data, and the sense that they can successfully continue to explore and employ these materials on their own.

Topics covered during the workshop include:
  • Organization and structure of MODIS products, information about the MODIS sensor
  • Searching for and obtaining data
  • How MODIS atmosphere products are constructed
  • Understanding and use of important aerosol and cloud parameters included in the data set
  • Software tools used for data analysis, on-line data analysis tools
  • The AERONET worldwide network of ground based sunphotometer data
  • The AERONET synergy tool
  • Important ancillary data sets, aerosol product validation
  • An introduction to additional sensors in the A-train and the A-train data depot
  • Additional sensors: Parasol, MISR, Calipso
