New Challenges for Industrial CFD-Based Analysis and Design

Professor Em. Charles Hirsch

Vrije Universiteit, Brussel
Fellow, Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts
President, NUMECA International

Four major challenges face the future of CFD-based analysis and design software systems, to accompany the industrial requirements towards enhanced prediction range and reliability:
  1. The requirements for High fidelity CFD, implying faster and more efficient mesh generation systems and CFD algorithms, in relation to the continuous growth of the computer massively parallel capability.
  2. The necessity for improvements in physical modeling, in particular turbulence, multiphase flow and combustion models.
  3. The necessity to incorporate the uncertainties associated to numerical simulations, such as operational and geometrical uncertainties. This has a major impact on basic issues, such as the concept of validation, the approach to experiments and on the design process in order to reduce the risks associated with the simulation based decision process.
  4. The development of robust design methodologies taking into account the presence of uncertainties.
These topics will be illustrated by several applications from the כields of propulsion, aerospace, energy production, ship hydrodynamics.

Wednesday July 21 2010.
at 16:30, Room 241,
Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Technion
Light refreshments will be served before the seminar.
