Experimental Techniques for Gas Turbine Hot Section Cooling Studies

Boris Glezer

Optimized Turbine Solutions, San Diego, USA

Presented seminar addresses one of the most critical areas for successful design of advanced gas turbine engines - development and experimental validation of modern cooling techniques for the engine hot section.
Presentation describes the world class experimental heat transfer facility designed by the author and built under his leadership at Solar Turbines, USA. Unique experimental techniques are described and their application is demonstrated on specific test rigs for simulation of realistic conditions for the engine hot section cooled components: combustor liners, turbine nozzles, blades and discs. For the industry leaders such facility usually carries thee important functions: validation of particular cooling design, calibration of available numerical methods and generation of improved cooling techniques. In the university environment this facility often assists in development of improved cooling techniques and producing a valuable generic data for the industry.
